That thing, even Matthew himself couldn't figure it out.
She sat in front of him and the guarded expression on her face was the only thing she needed in order to get it across to him that Claire told her everything that happened, how much of an asshole she painted him as was the only thing he didn't know.
He wouldn't be surprised if she made it look like he is the biggest scum, after all, he tried to use her for his own selfish gain.
'Sapphire . . ." He said when he couldn't stand the uncomfortable and awkward silence that hung in the air, the tension was so thick that a knife could cut through it and her gaze wasn't wavering, there was no warmth in her eyes.
'When were you planning to apologize to her?" She cut him off after he said her name and he felt the words get stuck in his throat.
'Wh...What?"
'You should at least apologize for letting her find out through another person, it couldn't get worse that the informer is Melissa," She said dryly, her voice also lacking warmth.
'About . . ."
'I don't want to hear anything about your feelings Matthew. You keep that nonsense to yourself just like how you have kept it to yourself all these years and how you planned to keep it for the rest of our lives if Melissa hadn't burst the bubbles. But I still think that you owe Claire an apology."
'I know that you don't want to hear this from me but I would say it anyway_"
'If this is about those feelings of yours, you might as well keep it," She insisted with more conviction beneath her words.
'Alexander is not the best for you, he might have cooked a cock and bull story about his ex to you but all is not like it seems. He left the gang only the week he discovered that he is getting married to you which means that there is still danger lurking around you and the kids and Alexander might not be able to keep it all under wraps!" He exclaimed and Sapphire paused before scoffing.
'You sure are one hell of a gutsy man! In this situation, you are still trying to get me to despise my husband. You are such a nut-job Matthew. I am not sorry that I said that," she told him and walked away angrily while he watched her with mouth slightly agape, he was surprised … No, he was shocked.
Sapphire had never once in all his twelve years of knowing her insulted him, the fact that she did today just showed how much he messed up.
He ran his hand through his hair in utter frustration.
-----------------------
Sapphire marched towards the exit of the restaurant angrily, she wondered if he had always been such an asshole and she had failed to notice it or if he just did a pretty good job putting his true nature under wraps.
She wasn't concentrating on where she was going and barely made sense of her surroundings which made her bag drop to the floor when she bumped into someone.
She half expected the woman to scream at her and raise hell but instead she bent down and helped her pick up her bag, dust it and handed it to her.
The woman dressed in a basic suit looked as wealthy as hell, she almost looked flawless and her smile made Sapphire feel better, the woman looked not a day over thirty.
'You must have a lot on your mind," She told her and Sapphire nodded in acknowledgment.
'I am so sorry I bumped into you," Sapphire replied. 'But yes, I do have a lot on my mind."
'It is okay," she said and Sapphire nodded before trying to walk away.
'You forgot this Ms. Sapphire," She said and Sapphire turned to look at the woman in surprise.
'You know me?" She asked and the woman chuckled in amusement.
'You looked so surprised by the fact that I know you when half the population loves getting their hands that have your name printed as the headline," she said and handed her bag to her. 'But yeah, I know you. Ms. Sapphire Aldine," She said and Sapphire nodded.
She is so confident, was her thought as she studied the woman's bright blue eyes, shoulder length brown hair and small smile on her red lips.
'Oh, I guess you are right." She chuckled. 'The public knows too much about me. You are . . ."
'Yea, that is right, I am…" she paused. 'I think your phone needs your attention," she said and Sapphire noticed that the screen had lit up, she must have put it on silent.
It was her grandmother calling.
'Oh sorry, I need to take this, I hope to see you around," she said quickly from the woman in order to talk to her grandmother.
She couldn't be more disappointed when the older woman just wanted to talk about the position she didn't want.
Her upset mood returned and she didn't turn back as she made her way to her car in a hurried stride.
Maybe if she had, she would have noticed the woman staring intently at her. She was paying so much attention as if she was afraid Sapphire would disappear if she dared to blink.
--------------------
Melissa gritted her in anger as she slammed the door behind her.
Her grandmother is not shy to get it across that she favors Sapphire over her, it has always been known over the years but today she crossed a huge line.
How dare she do that in front of all the shareholders? Was she trying to make me seem like a joke to all of them? Am I not worth taking over the company? She also ruined the girl's life, she participated heavily in the predicament that befell, all the trouble she went through also had her as source in what way or the other. What makes her think that she is so righteous?
Those were her angry thoughts as she made her way to her room, she is so frustrated with all the scheming that her grandmother is up to.
Why can't she just accept her and let the sleeping dog lie? Does she want her to raise another hell?
'Melissa, you see the idiots of this house. Matthew went to meet Sapphire once again. I heard him talking to his mother and he seemed to be in a worry like no other. I mean what is so special about that swine anyway?" Marylynne said to her daughter when she saw her but she didn't pause to read her expression because she remembered she left her bag on the floor in the room.
The ten thousand dollar bag was not supposed to be on the floor, it is her new baby, new and chic in town.
Melissa scoffed and fisted her hand in anger. The front door opened and she turned to see her grandmother making her way to the study. She didn't see her or if she did, she didn't show it.
She walked into her study briskly and Melissa quickly hurried after the older woman.
'What did I do to you that made you hate me so much? Don't give me the crap about what I did to Sapphire, you were also involved!" She said as soon as she was standing in the study.
'Trust me Melissa, the disdain I feel for myself is more than my disappointment in you. That should be saying something," She said nonchalantly as if they were discussing the awful weather that they experienced.
'Grandma!" She yelled in disbelief.
'We are sinners Melissa. We wronged her so much, the guilt I feel every day is enough to suffocate me but I had to have a chance at repentance. I must feel sorry for what I did and so should you,"
'What the hell are you saying?" She asked angrily and Emiliana let out an inaudible snort.
'You do Melissa. Your eyes tell me that you do but you don't feel guilty, you look ready to do it to her all over again,"
'And she would, with the way that you are handling things, I assure you that it would be worse," Melissa said icily, her eyes had turned scornful and filled with hatred, Emiliana smiled sadly.
'You should do this because of a company, Melissa. Blood is supposed to be thicker than water."
'Not when you favor one over the other,"
'Right back at you and your mother, you set that stage all her life, even till now, you have that award, should I remind you?"
'You should know that I won't let you be," she told her and Emiliana nodded.
'I am also ready for confession, it is the only way I can rest in peace,"
'You should ask if Sapphire is ready for what would hit her. And if that is what you want. You have a hell of a confession to make," Melissa replied, she paused for a long while, her eyes running over her grandmother's features in irritation.
'You are going to rest in peace like no other." She said with finality in her voice and Max who was passing by stopped with wide eyes while Venita who had been hiding under the desk all along cover her mouth, eyes wide in disbelief, she only heard the last part because that was when she focused on their conversation, she had tuned out all their yelling.
